A fresh and rejuvenated Rosemont College women's basketball team is set to begin the 2009-10 season. Head Coach Andy McGovern returns for his ninth season while Jana Rediger and Cecelia Saunders ('07) their second season assisting McGovern. Joining the staff this year is Rosemont graduate and four year basketball starter Andrea Boyle ('08).
The 2008-09 season was tough for the Ravens. The team finished the year 4-21 overall and 1-15 in the Colonial States Athletic Conference. As a team, Rosemont averaged 49.4 points per game and 41.8 rebounds. At the charity strip they shot 55 percent going 256-462.
Things are looking brighter though this season. The team returns its core starters from last year while adding a talented young group of recruits.
The team will be lead by junior captains Karen Boyle and Christa Bednarek. Boyle tallied 196 points, third on the team last season. She also shot 68 percent from the line going 30-44. Bednarek had 139 points on the season, playing in all 25 games.
Senior Adriann Demchenko will look to continue her strong defense. Last year, she led the team and conference in rebounding averaging 12.8 per game and placing her 6th in all of the NCAA Division III. She led the team in scoring averaging 10.6 per game (265 total) giving her a double-double average for the season. In total, she tallied 11 double-doubles on the season.
Junior Heather Daneker should prove to be a threat outside the arc again this season. She lead last year's squad with 31 three pointers.
Rounding out the returnees is senior Janise Henderson and sophomore Tanisha Lockerman. Henderson's speed on the court will be an asset. Lockerman saw action in 23 games last season and with a season under her belt, will look to be even more of a presence on the court.
The team welcomes seven new faces: Rachelle Allen, Kate Clarkson, Courtney Dorsey, Latifah Edwards, Berneda Hayward, Carlie Kropp, and Ashley Montecchio. McGovern will look to the rookies to provide a good depth to the bench as well as get some solid starts and give solid offense to the team.
Rosemont starts off the season with a non-conference game against Delaware Valley College on Tuesday, November 17th at 7pm.
