2013 Season Recap
The Rosemont Men’s Lacrosse team came into its second season of existence seeking their first win in program history. The team earned that victory on March 9, 2011 when they defeated Penn State – Abington by a final score of 19-6.
The team struggled this season to an overall record of 1-14. Due to injury, the team had to play without the services of the nation’s leading ground ball collector and the team’s second-leading scorer, Dean Grisoff. But the team persevered and the players showed great improvement over their premiere season.
Freshman Stephen Licata set a new team standard, scoring 37 goals (2.5/game). Justin Regan, the team’s leading scorer last season, continued to consistently find the net this year, accounting for 14 goals. The team had four players reach double-figures in goals this season. In addition to Licata and Regan, Will Lawlor (12) and Ralph Ibezim (11) reached double-digits.
Lawlor had 18 assists to establish the new team record in that statistical category. Licata (45) and Lawlor (30) broke last year’s record of 29 points set by Regan.
The team showed improvement up and down the stat sheet. Of course, the most important statistic is wins (1 vs. 0), but the squad also set new marks for other significant categories: goals scored (+67%), assists (+115%), points (+82%), shots (+18%), shots on goal (+41%), man-up goals (+400%), ground balls (+12%) and turnovers (-4%).
There was also significant improvement shown between the pipes. Goals against (-17%), Goals against average (-23%) and saves (+47%). Brody Safanek worked over 700 minutes in goal this year and set a new program mark, saving 46% of shots on goal (the team saved 32% last season) with 198 saves. Safranek ended the season ranked #6 nationally in saves per game.
At the conclusion of the season the team bid adieu to their one senior, Tom Dugan, the team’s first captain.
Head Coach Brian Zusi is looking forward exploiting the positive momentum from the 2013 year to the 2014 season to hopefully add more games into the win column for the Ravens.
