2009 Men's Soccer Overview

The Rosemont men’s soccer team blew away all expectations in its inaugural season. The team finished the season 6-9 overall and 3-6 in the Colonial States Athletic Conference placing them seventh in the conference.

The Ravens were a young squad with 14 first years and one junior. Head Coach Will Nord took the young squad and made them a strong contender in the CSAC, giving top teams Neumann University, Marywood University, and Gwynedd Mercy College tough games. For his efforts he was named the CSAC Coach of the Year for Men’s Soccer.

Rosemont earned its first win against Valley Forge Christian College and took its first conference win against Keystone College, a game that went into double-overtime. The team also notched wins off of Penn State-Brandywine, Immaculata University, Baptist Bible College and Penn State-Berks.

Leading the team were Captains Will McLaughlin and Sergio Martinez. McLaughlin, a junior striker, notched a goal in the team’s win against Immaculata. Martinez, a first year midfielder, has a goal and two assists. His play earned him a spot on the CSAC All-Conference Second team for midfield.

As a team, the Ravens have earned three shutout victories and scored 23 goals. First year goalkeeper Ron Vogelei has a .795 save percentage ranking him fifth in the conference. Vogelei was also named to the CSAC All-Sportsmanship team.

Leading the team in scoring was first year forward Rodney Aguirre. He tallied six goals, three game winners, and two assists on the year. He was an Honorable Mention on the CSAC All-Conference team.

First year defender Ryan McElroy also had a strong year. His strong defensive skills helped the team to three shutouts and earned him a place on the All-Conference Second team. Joining him on the defensive line were Dan Petit and Jason Villwock. Both Petit and Villwock has strong seasons and gave many opposing offensives trouble in the box.

Other top goal scorers for the Ravens were first years Patrick McElroy, Freddie Moss, and Jalal Mohamed. As a midfield, McElroy scored five goals. Moss notched four, two of which were game winners as a forward. Mohamed, another forward had three goals including the game winner in the team’s first win against Valley Forge Christian.

Helping out the scoreres were midfielders Ryan Hartzell and Dan Moreno. Hartzel had three assists on the season while Moreno notched a goal.

Rounding out the squad was forward Moses Dixon, midfielder Christian Rosario, and defender Ryan Brazuk.

Rosemont will return the entire team for the 2010 season. With a season under its belt and a drive to be the best, the team will be sure to make another strong run.
